Rapunzel’s Look Might Not Be A Dream Away…

August 28th, 2013

~Eve Marx shares her experience.

About a year and a half ago, I decided to grow my hair. Really grow my hair, like as long as I could grow it. What prompted this bold move was noticing that very few ladies my age could even grow their hair very long. A funny thing happens as you age. Your hair, all your hair, sometimes stops growing! Since this wasn’t happening to me, I decided to shoot for the moon and see how long it would grow. Could I be Rapunzel?

Long hair – and now mine is more than halfway down my back – requires special attention. You’ll hear people say you should never brush it, although I brush mine every night. You’ll hear people say you shouldn’t wash it, and that’s partly true advice. What you do wash (and condition) your hair with when it’s longer than 10” counts, it turns out. I’ve discovered using the same product over and over dulls my hair and makes it coarse, no matter how much at first I loved the product. The secret is to keep a mélange of products handily in the shower and mix it up.

Here’s a brief list of my favorite long-hair shampoos & conditioners:
- Ouidad’s Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo is a must in summer. And since it’s humid and damp pretty much throughout the fall, I consider this product a staple. A gentle, sulfate-free cleanser, it fights frizz for days at a time, a real plus if you’re only washing your hair once or twice a week, which many long haired types prefer. Paired with the Climate Control Defrizzing Conditioner, this duo will leave you feeling relaxed and confident about your hair, whether it’s curly or not, no matter the weather.
- Agadir Argan Oil Moisturizing Shampoo is a perfect product. Yes, it’s rather expensive, but you only need a tiny bit. Paraben, sulfate-free, super enriched with Vitamin E, antioxidants, Omega 6 and Omega 9, this luxurious shampoo gives an extremely satisfying genuine lather, a sensual element I sometimes miss in other no-poo or low-poo products. [Call me old school, but I still crave some suds. Love this product.]
- Acqua di Parma Colonia Hair Shampoo is truly sumptuous; teamed with the matching conditioner, this duo of products from Italy really will leave your hair so soft and clean and tangle-free right out of the shower that there’s no need for any post-shower product. And the scent! It’s a delicious perfume; alluringly aromatic with the gentle scent of Sicilian citrus, rosemary, verbena, damask rose, sandalwood, vertivert, patchouli and a hint of lavender. Yum.
- Pantene Beautiful Lengths Strengthening Conditioner is specially formulated for those who are hoping to grow their hair to great lengths and keep it there. It really does protect against damage, split ends, and frizz. And because it’s inexpensive, you can really pour it on and coat every strand.

Not blow drying your hair and quickly rinsing out salt or chlorine is a must if you’re going for great lengths. When I stopped regularly blow drying my hair, I saw the end of split ends. Of course if you really want to grow your hair, steer out of the salon, where they will always cut it!

Enjoying my long hair with my favorite pooch....
