A Mid-Summer’s Day safety reminder.

imageSummer is in full swing now, and UV indexes have been reaching an all-time high hovering between 9, 10! And with summer wardrobes revolving around 'slim dressing'---swimsuits, shorts, sun-dresses and flip flops, the skin is exposed to the sun more than you possibly would like. But when the heat index hits 100, comfort is the only thing that comes to mind. Those darn free radicals floating around can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin- exactly what we need to keep us young looking, and skin beautiful. Recent studies have shown that the higher number in SPF doesn't necessary mean better. What does matter is that you are protected from broad-spectrum SPF creams---UVA and UVB rays, and that you reapply often. Personally, I find SPF 30 does the trick, and reapplying frequently is key. One that I like very much, which is affordable is Murad's Oil-Free Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30/PA+++, $31.

imageAnother tip is wearing your SPF--- a brand I love is Parasol- sun protective clothing that is chic and stylish. Because it acts as a physical barrier against both UVA and UVB rays. The Mayo Clinic had determined that sun-protective clothing is the best form of sun protection. You should also know that all clothing does not protect you from the sun. People are surprised to learn that a regular t-shirt typically has a SPF rating of 5 and most summer clothing actually provides less protection than SPF30 sunscreen. And when regular clothing gets wet, it can lose up to 50% of its sun-protective value. This line keeps getting better each season with styles perfect for the beach, the track and everyday activities. Also, Parasol offers a great selection for young girls as young as toddlers.

OR there is is always internal SPF! Interesting to know, there are ways we can protect ourselves internally for ultimate skin protection. I recently saw Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA and founder of Murad Inc., talk on Weekend TODAY where he revealed that eating your way to environmental protection can decrease your chances of environmental damage and increase your cellular health.

He explains how consuming proper plant-based foods can create a powerful reinforcing form of protection during the warmer months. "Individuals encounter sun damage every day, merely walking outside during their lunch breaks or driving in their cars," says Dr. Murad. "Although daily SPF moisturizers and creams are essential, it is helpful to double up on your sun protection through internal resources."

Dr. Murad has discovered and scientifically tested a regimen of foods that contain SPF enhancing elements. These "superfoods" can be found in many of Murad's topical formulas. But, users can also reap their benefits by incorporating them into their daily diets.
