Salute the Sun

May 16th, 2007

A healthy outlook for your skin.

Let's face it; the summer is all about having fun in the sun. You can't escape it, but you can 'shade your skin' with these helpful tips.

image~ Serious Protection
When choosing a sunblock be sure it protects you from both UVB and UVA rays. Most recently, the FDA approved these ingredients that work fabulously in sunscreen protection: Mexoryl, found in La-Roche Posay Anthelios and Lancome's UV Expert and Helioplex found in Neutrogena's Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 45 & 55.

Don't skimp on sunscreen. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation guidelines, you should slather on at least two tablespoons (or palmfuls) for your entire body. Rubbing in lotion vigorously may reduce its efficacy. Also, remember to reapply every two hours and if you are one, who forgets, opt for a higher SPF like Clarins Sunscreen Cream High Protection SPF 30.

~How high should you go?
The opinions vary of just how effective a 30+ SPF really is. The FDA has not taken sides and is currently evaluating whether to endorse SPF's over 15. However, MBB believes that children and sun-sensitive individuals definitely require a healthy dose of SPF 30. Interesting enough, an article in today's NY Times, What's New in Sun-Screen Products, offers a look at the F.D.A. point of view on sun protection numbers.

~Cover Up
Depending on where you are, be sure to safely shun the sun with these pieces.
-An Umbrella
-A hat, cap or visor to protect hair, face and eyes
-Sunglasses for sensitive eye areas
-A long sleeve t-shirt when the sun gets the best of you
-Sunscreen, don't leave home without it

~Expiration Dates
As a rule, SPF products are only 100% effective for six months. After this time, ingredients begin to slowly breakdown, making them less potent.
