Be Fifty and Be Nifty!

April 11th, 2014

~ a beauty maven shares her NEW book.

image
Andrea Q. Robinson has always "wowed' me. So many years ago when I was asked to meet with her regarding a beauty trend report, I was excited, nervous and never expected this one meeting would evolve to years of many more projects. Today, Mrs. Robinson is a mentor to me, a sophisticated, smart woman whom I always will continue to admire, and who I've never dreamed about creating a strong working relationship with.

Mrs. Robinson's long list of credentials begins as Beauty Editor for, Seventeen, Mademoiselle, and Vogue to launching the blockbuster Ultima II's The Nakeds neutral palette and end's with President of Tom Ford Beauty. But I refer to the word 'end' as in working for others, her new role as self-entrepreneur is only just beginning with the launch of her latest book, Toss the Gloss: Beauty Tips, Tricks & Truths for Women 50+ published this month . I am also honored to have contributed to the research, tips and proofread the many beauty chapters that share her tips, tricks, likes and dislikes for how women over fifty need to look glamorous and beautiful~ and she is awfully honest in a good way giving us the 'truth' and facts that we sometimes don't want to face. All for the sake of beauty!

This is just a quick synapse of her book, which I plan on capturing more in a feature in the Beautyflash , but I wanted to share this most exciting launch and there is just no stopping this "ultimate-beauty industry insider". For now you can read about her latest review in the NYTimes .

(And I am also tickled pink to have a mention in the back of her book!)

Lancôme Announces…

April 4th, 2014

~Lupita Nyong’o as Brand Ambassadress

image
I am so very excited to share this news....Maison Lancôme is delighted to announce Academy award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o as its new brand ambassadress.
With her instinctive and sophisticated talent and one of a kind beauty, both delicate and exuding strength, 31-year-old Lupita Nyong’o has taken the world by storm. She received an Academy Award® in the category of “Best Supporting Actress” for her moving portrayal of Patsey in Steve McQueen’s acclaimed film 12 Years a Slave–making her the fourth Academy Award® winning Lancôme ambassadress. Her performance also won her many other prestigious awards worldwide, including the Screen Actors Guild® Award, the Independent Spirit Award, NAACP Award, as well as the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards' "New Hollywood Award.”
Lupita Nyong’o, a recent graduate from the Yale School of Drama, has an eclectic artistic repertoire, having performed on stage as well as having directed the award-winning feature-length documentary, In My Genes, about the reality of living with albinism in Kenya. She was recently seen in the action thriller Non-Stop, opposite Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore. The Mexican-born, Kenyan actress is an outstanding example of a natural beauty. Confident and simply true to herself, she embraces life with freshness, citing happiness as the most attractive form of radiance.

"I am truly honored to join the Maison Lancôme, a brand with such a prestigious history that I have always loved. I am particularly proud to represent its unique vision for women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman's freedom to be herself,” confided Lupita Nyong’o. Joining Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penélope Cruz, and the recently appointed young actress Lily Collins, Lupita Nyong’o will be seen this summer in campaigns shot by star photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

They couldn't have chosen a more beautiful African Beauty!

SkinCeutricals Resveratrol B E:  Better Than A Fine Wine

April 2nd, 2014

~ the new ingredient receiving the ‘buzz’.

image
Back in January, I attended a SkinCeuticals event, which I might add seldom launches new products. So when they do, you attend, you listen and you get a sense of excitement in the air, because all the beauty reporters, editors and bloggers want to find out more. In fact, I over heard whispers on how much many of these experienced editors just simply LOVE the SkinCeuticals' line. Some snippets of conversations were, "these products are the best!", "I am obsessed with C E Ferulic, and wouldn't dream of not using it", "I've been using them for a year now and see a BIG difference in my skin", and "I am so excited to hear the news tonight". So now you get a better idea why I was eager to find out just what the latest launch would be. So here is the best news for wine lovers: The new SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E uses the same antioxidant found in red wine, Resveratrol, to help repair your skin—and boost its own regenerative ability. Resveratrol is definitely a buzzword ingredient, meaning skin care companies are touting its benefits in their serums and creams, and women are using the excuse of drinking red wine more to improve the quality of their skin! Personally, I rather reap the rewards by using the actual product, by I know I am not in the majority, most prefer to drink it! However, don't be fooled, Dr. Patricia Farris, a dermatologist, shared this tip, "look for topically applied formulations with a concentration of at least 1% of Resveratrol — they will be more effective than anything ingestible".

With this tip in mind, I am happy to report that this new product contains Resveratrol at the highest concentration of any skincare product on the market today, and it is paired with two ingredients, Baicalin and Vitamin E, to boost the product's benefit even more.

My thoughts: I've been using it in the evening for the past four to six weeks, and definitely have found improvements. My skin is definitely less red in the morning, looks radiant and definitely looks smoother, meaning my wrinkles seem less prominent. My skin just feels better, more taut too!

For best results, apply the SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E in the evening after you’ve washed your face. Dr. Farris highly recommends this as a nighttime serum, because the best way to reap the benefits of resveratrol is through a serum that you apply at night. "The entire body goes into repair mode at night, and resveratrol helps neutralize damaging oxidative stress and improves the skin's natural healing process by boosting natural antioxidants." And, this was news to me, Dr. Farris shared this important fact, "Resveratrol is a dual antioxidant, it neutralizes free radicals on its own, and also stimulates the NRF-2 pathway to help the body start making its own antioxidants." Any product that stimulates action within the skin receives two thumbs up from me, as it helps the repair process even more.

Many of you might be well-versed with this line and if you aren't, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic has been the favorite in the line, but I believe it now has found its match. The best news is that these two products don't conflict with your routine, one is used during the day and the other at night. This definitely sounds like a win-win routine, and please know that after the application with both serums you can apply a moisturizer afterwards.

A New MUST-Know in Beauty:  An Exfoliator Indicator

April 1st, 2014

~ courtesy of St. Ives!

No, this isn't an April's Fools joke and YES, I say it time and time again, "I am a HUGE fan of exfoliators." So when this popped into my inbox, I read it. What I love so much about this concept, is it signifies the level of strength of St. Ives scrubs, which they just added two new additions to the existing line. St. Ives's new indicator shows the level of exfoliation to help people find their best scrub match.

Important Note to Readers: Once should NEVER, EVER use a deep strength on you face under any conditions. Gentle is the way to go!
image
Next time you are at the local drugstore pick up a St. Ives scrub to kick off spring, which might make an appearance this week! Scrub a dub and rub off dull and dry winter skin with one of their new scrubs and use this new handy Exfoliation Meter.

Strength Level: Gentle
· NEW: Nourished & Smooth Oatmeal Scrub + Mask exfoliates skin with its gentle strength and also hydrates dry skin. For an extra softening benefit, use as a mask by leaving on face for 5-7 minutes (SRP: $3.99 - $4.79).
· Blackhead Clearing Green Tea Scrub helps to clear breakouts while calming redness in your skin (SRP: $3.99 - $4.79).

imageStrength Level: Moderate
·NEW: Even & Bright Pink Lemon & Mandarin Orange Scrub polishes away unwanted imperfections to help even out skin tone (SRP: $3.99 - $4.79).

Strength Level: Deep
· Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub is an award-winning scrub that leaves skin smooth and brightens dull skin (SRP: $3.99 - $4.79).
· Blemish Control Apricot Scrub exfoliates to deeply clean pores and helps stop breakouts before they occur (SRP: $3.99 - $4.79).

Also, you should know St. Ives uses environmentally friendly natural exfoliants, like ground walnut shells instead of those disastrous microbeads.

My Obsession with The Multiple Sticks by Nars

March 21st, 2014

~ and now there’s more to obsess about.

image
The Nars Multiples has been my ultimate favorite creamy, dewy stick to use on cheeks (sometimes even eyes and lips) for many years now. I probably have 8 out of the existing shade range. My favorites are (not in any specific order): Maldives, Riviera and South Beach. Recently they launched the Matte Multiples, which offers the same creamy textures, but only difference is it offers a matte finish. Definitely, on trend and great for those who have oil skin.

The new Multiples just became available, and I'm loving the Anguilla shade both due to the color and this is my most favorite Caribbean island I've ever visited. I get all sunny just wearing it.

NARS The Matte Multiple Collection, $39 each, available at NARS.

Spring Beauty:  Get Glowing Skin Now

March 20th, 2014

~ These products will help you!

It's right around this time of year—when our skin begins to react to the unsure weather forecast, is it or isn't it spring yet? This weekend declares 60 degree weather on Saturday, but next week we might be in trouble with another snowstorm We'll wait and see, but if you're like me, I've been exfoliating like mad trying to rid adieu to my dull, dry winter complexion from head to toe. Here are a few of my favorite products to brighten up, and keep the warm wishes our way.
image
1. Since I am a regular when it comes to exfoliating my complexion, I opt for something gentle and started using Murad Age Reform AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser, which contains tiny exfoliating granules that removes all those tiny bumps. But what I love most is its creamy formula that slightly foams making it feel more lux and thick.
image
2. Who doesn't desire that "GLOW" this time of year, and Dr. Gross gives us good reason to turn to these one-step pads that are a cinch to use. One swipe and you will transform dull texture and tone into brighter, glowing skin better than Mother Nature herself---- now that's natural, safe and easy. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare 'Alpha Beta Glow Pads' Anti-Aging Exfoliating Self-Tanner for Face.
image
3. This is just what your body (& mind) crave, a dose of coconut smoothing over your body and the scent uplifting your mind to a tropical feel, even though you are standing right in your everyday shower. This gentle-exfoliator uses coconut husks and ground coconut shells in a creamy, moisturizing scrub to help reveal softer, smoother skin below the neck. The Body Shop Coconut Body Scrub, $20.

The NEW Buzz:  Made in Africa

March 14th, 2014

~ Marula Oil

image
Move over chemical formulations! As seen in yesterday's New York Times article, many luxury brands are swapping previously used ingredients for ingredients from and indigenous to Africa. We already are in the know about the latest 'ingredient' success story to come out of Africa is Moroccanoil, a hair- and skin-care company that features argan oil in their formulations. But wait there is more.

There's another “buzz-worthy” ingredient that was spotlighted in the article is Marula Oil – known as Africa’s Miracle Oil. Derived from the Marula tree.

Pioneering this ingredient trend is Nyakio Kamoche Grieco, founder and namesake of nyakio™, a collection of skincare products featuring key African ingredients and oils, including Trichilia Oil, Ximenia Oil, Mongongo Nut Oil, Kenyan Coffee and Kola Nut.

This oil is a key ingredient in the below nyakio products:
- Hydrating Eye Cream with Kola Nut
- Hydrating Face Lotion with Kola Nut, Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Sunscreen
- Hydrating Lip Balm with Kola Nut

nyakio products are a highly effective way to exfoliate and hydrate skin – just in time for spring.

How To Use Dry Shampoo and Now There’s One For Your Ends

March 13th, 2014

~An expert shares her tips.

imageimage
Surveys are showing that women are washing their hair less and less now, partly because lived-in texture is hot and partly because there are so many good dry shampoos on the market now,” says Ruth Roche, Artistic Ambassador for Pureology Serious Colour Care.

Roche’s favorite is Pureology Fresh Approach Dry Shampoo because it contains minerals Smithsonite and Obsidian to absorb oil rather than talc, which can make hair appear chalky. It also contains an anti-fade complex to prolong the life of hair color…bonus!

Using a dry shampoo saves a ton of time, but can be intimidating to apply. Follow these tips for best results and repeat as necessary until hair is washed.

On day 2 or 3 after shampooing, brush hair thoroughly from roots to ends.
Apply Pureology Fresh Approach to the root area throughout, holding the can about 6 inches away from head. Be sure to lift each section, so product is applied to the root area.
Use a blow dryer quickly on the areas where the product is to help absorb the oil.
Brush thoroughly again to remove oil/excess product and increase volume.
Set/style hair or run hands through and go!

Now this is something NEW: The ends of hair tend to get dry rather than oily with time, apply Pureology Dry Condition to fix that – it conditions, reduces frizz and static and increases shine,” adds Roche.

A Beauty Tool with Some Royalty

March 12th, 2014

~ Beautyblender Royal

image
The original beautyblender®, is being raved as the world’s leading makeup sponge applicator. I have yet to try it, but keep hearing move outstanding things about it from makeup artist who swear they wouldn't attend a fashion show or shoot without this in their makeup bag.

Now this leading makeup tool has a color twist with some royalty attached to it. Introducing the “Queen B” of all beauty sponges--- Beautyblender has teamed up with Sephora to launch the limited edition beautyblender® Royal in celebration of The Color of the Year 2014: Radiant Orchid!

If you aren't familiar with it, here's what you need to know. Beautyblender is an elliptically shaped, non-disposable, environmentally friendly, hi-definition cosmetics sponge applicator made by celebrity makeup artist Rea Ann Silva, which was created to leave you with a professional finish and a flawless complexion.

How Do You Use beautyblender?
- Use beautyblender damp when applying wet/dry make up. When beautyblender is wet it is normal for it to expand to nearly twice its original size. Wash after use and place in the Beautyblender insert pedestal to dry.

- Bounce beautyblender against your face when applying make up. Bouncing, called stippling in the makeup world, blends makeup without creating changes in the texture or tone of your skin

- Use beautyblender's pointed side for hard-to-reach spots like around the nose and mouth, and under the eyes

- Use the round base for foundation and blush on the larger areas of your face such as your forehead, cheeks and chin

- If you have problem skin beautyblender works to cover blemishes. Use the pointed end and the stipple and twist technique to work make up into depressed areas of the face. The stippling and twisting action feathers out the make up's edges, leaving a perfect finish.

Beautyblender Royal retails for $19.95 at Sephora stores nationwide and Sephora.com.

Color Purple

March 3rd, 2014

~as in Nicole Richie’s new hair color.

image
Nicole Richie has gone purple – and it's for real.

Joel Warren (master colorist and co-founder of Warren Tricomi Salons) and George Papanikolas (Matrix Celebrity Hairstylist) weighed in on Nicole’s new color.

While Joel noted that the color is “difficult to achieve without sacrificing hair’s health” and George agreed that the shade can be “damaging” and “high-maintenance,” both love the look.

WHO CAN ROCK IT?
“Anyone who is fashion forward; Considering purple hair doesn't happen in nature, you don't need to be too concerned with your skin tone, but you will need to adjust your makeup. Too much and you can start to look like a clown. Nicole tends to keep her make-up natural which is a nice combination,” says George.

HOW TO MAINTAIN IT
· “Pastel colors fade quickly, so it is important to use products that will help the color last longer. To keep this bold of a shade, you have to refresh the color weekly,” says Joel.

· George agrees, “The upkeep is a full time job. The roots need retouching every few weeks, and the pastel toner every few days, otherwise it turns into an uneven platinum blonde.”

I think I will stay with brown.

Oscars 2014 Beauty Update:  Camila Alves

March 3rd, 2014

~Best-Supporting Wife

image
Camila Alves — may have been known as The Best Actor's Wife last night, but to me she scored one of the most stunning looks at the Oscars. Camila's pink gown was a favorite of the night, and the cape offering a sophisticated allure that is the latest example of Hollywood-royalty worthy.

“Our inspiration for tonight’s look on Camila is very old classic Hollywood with a modern twist featuring warm and golden tones,” says makeup artist Patrick de Fontbrune. “She’s wearing a beautiful soft flush pink/salmon Gabriella Cadena dress with an opening in the back and it is just stunning.”

Patrick offers a step-by-step guide for how he created Camila’s beauty look:

• I started by applying Votre Vu’s Champagne Kisses on Camila’s lips for hydration. Then, I began to moisturize her face first with VBeaute’s Anti-Wrinkle Protecting Serum and then applied Votre Vu’s Attentive Crème du Jour with a brush. For her eyes, I dabbed VBeaute’s Nourishing Repair Eye Cream all around.

• To even out her complexion and give a golden glow, I mixed Votre Vu’s Love Me Deux Tinted Moisturizer in Paris and St. Tropez and stippled it onto her skin using a sponge. This allowed me to concentrate and build the coverage where needed. For the more delicate areas, such as under the eyes, I used my fingers to apply to tinted moisturizer. Applying the product this way allowed me to achieve the most flawless results. Camila has perfect skin so the Love Me Deux provided just enough coverage. I really love this product because it comes with a matching concealer that makes it foolproof! I spot concealed around her nose and under the eyes for a flawless finish, then used a touch of Lingerie Pour Les Yeux in Medium over her eyelids to even out the skin there as well.

Oscars 2014 Beauty Update:  Lupita Nyong’o

March 3rd, 2014

~Cinderella Beauty

Duck-egg blue, Nairobi blue, when asked about the stunning dress, she replied: "I wanted to wear blue because blue reminds me of Nairobi--- no matter what you call the shade, it definitely was the color of the evening. Cosmetic houses are running to the labs to develop this shade as I type. But they can't duplicate Lupita's beauty- even though she is being compared to a Disney Princess, she sparkled all on her own. Lupita's blushing cheeks and sparkling lips added to this youthful winner's look, and the headband she wore is a much talked about hast-tag on twitter.

Flowery Find

February 26th, 2014

~Clinique Cheek Pop

image
While many of us are experiencing snow and a return of the polar vortex, I am still being hopeful that spring is around the corner. One way I'm putting these cold-weather blues behind me is by reaching for pretty palettes of brightness and flowery finds I can share with all of you. First on the list is Clinique's Cheek Pop ($21), which are highly pigmented blushes in an array of bright shades. The formula is more cream-like than powdery, which is perfect for my dry, older skin.

So even though I'm still covered up in winter wear, my cheeks are blushing in warming shades.

My Top Five Favorite Beauty Looks at NYFW Fall 2014

February 20th, 2014

~I sum up the best from backstage.

image
There are looks that are just not me, but still beautiful and trendy like the straight across eyeliner effect created by Gucci Westman. One of the eyeliner trends of the season is a straight-across style. “It requires a really precise line, so use a pointy Q-tip to clean up any imperfections.” —Gucci Westman for Revlon at the Fall 2014 Rag & Bone show.

And then there were the looks I really loved, because I can interpret them myself in the upcoming season.

Here they are:

1. STUNNING SILVERY NUDE EYE
image

Charlotte Tilbury for M.A.C Cosmetics created this look at Sass and Bide.

According to Charlotte Tilbury's website: The look was "a natural, fresh, youthful look with a cool punky edge. The focus of the look was a softly smudged, glossy-metallic cream eye, paired with dewy, youthful glowing skin. The brows were brushed up, and gelled in place. I left the lashes natural and uncurled. I used M.A.C Teddy eyeliner on the upper lash line, and smudged right into the lashes. I applied it inside the lower water line for added drama and definition. A silver, gold metallic cream mix was smudged onto the lids, and blended upwards and outwards; I also applied a flash of it to the inner corner of the eye to catch the light, and simultaneously create an open-eyed, brightening effect."

2. BRAIDED BUN
image

Here's how you do it:
Lead L'Oréal Professionnel stylist Amit Abraham divided hair into three precise sections that combined into a twirly braided bun at the Bibhu Mohapatra show. Artist Amit Abraham details the steps below.

- The upswept style we created is a modern interpretation of a traditional Tibetan braiding where hair is an expression of beauty, wealth and prosperity.
- First prep the hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Volumetry Root Spray to add density before blow-drying it
 smooth.
- Divide the hair into three sections, and secure each into a ponytail.
- Divide the center ponytail into two sections, and box braiding with two side ponytails. (Box braiding is a technique used to create a three-dimensional braid by weaving four sections of hair together. Leave 2 and a 1⁄2 inches of the tail unbraided and secure with an elastic band.)
- Wrap the braids in a circular shape at the back of the head, leaving the ends un-tucked and secure with pins.
- Finish with L’Oréal Professionnel Freezing Mist for a long-lasting hold, and L’Oréal Professionnel Perfect Shimmer for shine.

3. LADY-Like Nails
imageimageThe biggest trend is that nude nails are a BIG hit, and the shade of the season is Essie's Mademoiselle, and oldie but goodie sheer pink shade. It was seen at many shows, but two in particular were Alexander Wang, DKNY and Diane Von Furstenburg

4. BOLD Brows
image
Th beauty message was clear at 3.1 Phillip Lim it was all about ‘rocking the casbah’, according to Francelle Daly for NARS Cosmetics. Daly built a strong, squared brow with a “tapered finish and feathered edges.”

5. FAIRYTALE/GLITTERY LIPS
image
Being known as what 'fairytale lips are made of, the lips makeup artist James Kaliardos gave models at the Rodarte an edge combining part girlie (all that glitter), part bad girl(that brown shade). "It's how you imagine fairy-tale makeup," he said. He started by lining the models' lips with an eyeliner (Nars Eyeliner in Mambo), then mixed his own lip color using loose glitter, Nars Lipstick in Deborah Audacious, and Nars Larger Than Life Lip Glo a pair of iridescent lip colors done in rich shades of mauve and lavender--- giving it an extra edge.

~Check-out what’s on the shelves.

We saw the fashion industry surge when they launched affordable designer brands at mainstream, now beauty brands are continuing on the same distribution path. This month, Target will introduce a premium skin-care assortment stocked with seven brands from different countries.

Also included in the lineup are exclusive brands created in partnership with Target, including a line from Borghese called Borghese Age Defying Cellulare Complex, a bridge brand from Lydia Mondavi called 29 by Lydia Mondavi — her 29 Cosmetics collection is available elsewhere — and a dermatological offering from Minneapolis-based dermatologist Brian Zelickson.

What do models do if they show up to a show with less than impeccable skin? They turn to the experts at Skyn Iceland to help regenerate, brighten and awake their complexion. Here's a backstage scoop--- not many know: Founder, Sarah Kugelman, sets the 'foundation' of a flawless complexion by recommending these cult-favorite masks prior to the actual color cosmetics are applied. Of course she always recommends using her much loved cleansing cloths to ensure the skin is clean.

imageSkyn ICELAND’s must-have, Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels (I've written many posts on these, my all-time favorites) and Icelandic Relief Eye Cream (Read my post) to the area around the eyes to remove all traces of sleepless nights and endless runways. This is really the secret news, which I am sooooo very excited about, Skyn ICELAND previewed the NEW Hydro Cool Firming Face Gels, which are launching in April of 2014. They are an extension to our eye gels for forehead wrinkles and smile lines!!! The buzz backstage is everyone is really excited for them to launch and LOVE them just as much as the hydro coolers!!

Another added tip: Once you applied your makeup, finish with Skyn ICELAND’s Arctic Face Mist to set the make up, add a subtle glow and complete the face.

Backstage Report:  NYFW/FALL 2014: Skin

February 14th, 2014

Elizabeth Arden @ Angel Sanchez

image
I always sneak around to see who is using what skin care products backstage to ensure the model's skin looks perfect. So when I heard Elizabeth Arden was working their magic at the Angel Sanchez Show, I thought this would be a great time to scoop on the products used.

imageBackstage reports that the cult-favorite 8-hour cream was used to moisturize the model's lips. Also, the Vitamin D Serum from the Red Door Spa Professional line was used to prep and revitalize the skin. To guarantee a smooth makeup application, the Hyaluronic Serum was used to deeply hydrate skin.

Makeup and hair followed suit keeping it simple: Red Door Spa experts in hair, makeup and nails, led by Woody Michleb, Cesar Olivas and Iwona Opiola created an elegant, but conservative look inspired by the “Beatas” of Colonial Latin America. Hair was kept low-key. The makeup look was minimal and conservative with a strong brow to represent the darker side of the “Beatas.” Nails were kept simple using a light grey/white shade.

Redken’s Victoria Beckham Recap

image
Hair by Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Creative Consultant Guido used two key products, satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion and pillow proof blowdry two day extender to create easy, undone hair at Victoria Beckham's SS14 presentation. The hair was slouchy, easy and pure luxury.

"I wanted the hair to be consistent with Victoria's simple and modern collection. The whole idea is to create that ultra rich and luxurious feeling, without doing much to the hair. The ultimate idea of luxury in the beauty industry has changed dramatically in the last few years. It used to be fantastic and grand, but that doesn't really translate anymore, especially with younger designers like Victoria Beckham. It is all about the subtle details that make a big different on the end result."

Create the Look:

1. Apply satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion to damp hair
2. Create a messy center part
3. Allow hair to dry naturally
4. Wrap the hair around 2" curling iron to create additional movement if necessary
5. Spray pillow proof blowdry two day extender on mid-lengths and ends for added texture
6. Pull hair back into a loose low ponytail and secure with a hair elastic

A New Ring of Concern Lurking in Your Sink

February 11th, 2014

~ Microbeads!

image
In the past weeks, I tried a new toothpaste, I believe it's from Crest, and noticed every time I brush my teeth I'm left with tiny green beads in the sink. I thought it was just me, not targeting my rinse down the drain, but since I brush my teeth at least three times a day, I realized the residue was piling up. This morning I came across this article in today's NYTimes, which made me think of all these green beads lingering in water treatment vessels, which ultimately land up in our water system, lakes, and environment. Further reading made me become more aware that these beads are found in scrubs and other beauty products as well.

Here's how you can see it for yourself:
Take the products in your home that contain abrasive or exfoliating quality. Dissolve it into a bowl of hot water, then strain it through a piece of cheese cloth. Those little round bits are polyethylene or polypropylene micro-beads. Once these go down your drain, it mixes with the water for future travel.

So we might want to now think twice before we purchase products with abrasives in it. I myself, rave about exfoliating products, but there are also other products to use which don't affect our water system and dissolve. The companies that use these tiny nurdles, or ‘€œmicro-beads’€ as scrubbers in their products, have plenty of alternatives, like pumice or hard seed husks.

Let's reconsider our choices, I now know I will.

~ butter LONDON at Nicole Miller

imageimage
I thought it would be fun to start the season of trends off with NAILS so I will turn to the experts at butter LONDON to share the news.

butter LONDON’s Global Colour Ambassador, Katie Jane Hughes, was backstage to create the nail look at Nicole Miller’s A/W 2014 show. Here's the scoop.

Designer: Nicole Miller
Lead Manicurist: Katie Jane Hughes, butter LONDON Global Colour Ambassador
The Scoop: The collection was inspired by strong women warriors. Predominant colours in the collection included dark plum, light olive, wine, aqua and black paired with muted jewel tones.
The Look: Katie applied butter LONDON Nail Foundation to the nails followed by butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Union Jack Black. She then matted the look by applying butter LONDON Matte Finish Topcoat. Using a thin striping brush, Katie applied butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Knees Up – starting at the cuticle and creating a feather or flame like design along the nail. The shiny finish of Knees Up served as the perfect contrast to the matte black lacquer that popped at the tips.

A Mask For Your Eyes Only

January 30th, 2014

~You need to know about this one.

image
Shiseido discovered after many years of researching the skin that the eye area is a complex spot with many different problems: wrinkles, dark circles, puffiness, dryness and sensitive to name a few. That's why you're going to LOVE this NEW product launching in February, Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask ($63), which targets it all. [What's also great, you can buy a 3-pack for $17.50, which sounds more affordable than $63; especially if you just want to give it a try.]

It is a mask that you place under the eyes, which I prefer rather than one over the whole eye area. This allows me to continue to do my 'stuff' without it slipping off- never time to just relax and enjoy the 15- minute spa-like treatment; since I am a big multi-tasker. When you remove the mask you'll see it's magic right before your own eyes--- it improves the appearance of eye area wrinkles and helps brighten dark circles and dullness with advanced Pure Retinol Micro-Infusion Technology. The mask itself is made from cotton and stretchy fibers to ensure it snugs around the eye area transporting the must-needed ingredients to this area.

So when your eyes are tired, turn to this mask as your SOS treatment, pronto!

Cold Temps Call For These TWO Must-Haves For Your Bag

January 27th, 2014

~Nivea and Vaseline will save you this winter.

imageimage
Forget about who wore what at last night's Grammy Awards. The one question my friends and readers keep asking me, "Is what can I use on my dry lips and hands".

I don't hesitate to share this blue Nivea tin and this mini-Vaseline jar, which should be a MUST in your bag, car, and night table. Why? The Nivea Travel Sized Creme Tin is ideal for intensive moisturizing, which your hands call for this time of year, and the small size allows you to carry it around and reapply. Added Tip: A model friend of mine shared, when on shoots in Europe they would use this creme under her eyes and patted over her lips for extra moisture.

Same holds true for these Vaseline minis which are also available in Original, Coco Butter and Rosy Lips. I am coveted to Rosy Lips and don't leave home without it, but it is so difficult to find, I believe it is sold out all the time so when I find it, I buy it in multiples.

Both items won't cost you more than $3.00- probably less, and the Vaseline Minis is found on a cardboard backing next to the Vaseline Body Lotion. It looks like this, but not sold on line. In stores only.

imageAnd lastly, many also have been experiencing dry, itchy skin- I highly recommend you go buy a tub of CeraVe or Curel. The ceramides in these products work their magic to help combat that dreaded dryness.

Feel free to let me know if you LOVE my reccos at susan@mybeautyberry.com.

Latest Hair Color Trend in Hollywood

January 21st, 2014

BRONDE

Do you want the "IT" color? According to Rita Hazan, Celebrity Colorist, "Bronde" is the newest color star, which is the perfect balance between blonde and brown. Many celebrities who are naturally brunette have gone "bronde," paving the way for the "it" color trend to become most popular.

Here are different ways, according to Rita Hazan, you can achieve the look.
image- Beyonce has a darker complexion for her skin type, it's best to leave her natural color and slightly lighten it up. The darker roots allow her to go lighter without looking washed out. To give the color more depth, leave darker shades on the top, middle and bottom, and lighten hair throughout to create dimension and keep skin looking warm and glowing during the winter months.
image- Jennifer Lopez has a richer and fuller color. To get a similar look color the underneath as if the lighter color is almost hidden and peeking out, which will enhance the brown effect. This will create an illusion of volume, making the hair look thicker.
image- Jessica Biel's hair is more sun-kissed and colored more towards the middle of her face, creating a blended look rather drastically going too blond or too dark. This color technique created more of a sophisticated and mature look. The face framing highlights soften the face without washing her out since she has a lighter skin tone.

imageTo maintain this great color, try using Rita's Ultimate Shine Color Gloss for vibrancy between salon visits. Available at Sephora.com for $26.

And check out these new CLEAR SCALP & HAIR products launching this month:

Golden Globes Beauty Report:  Pretty Nail Look

January 13th, 2014

~ Copy Zooey Deschanel’s glamorous 3D nail design.

I am not sure if you missed it, but I did, and glad I got the lowdown on this pretty glam nail look that is so easy to do with L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Nail line.

Nail artist, Tom Bachik, got inspired from the beading in Zooey's beautiful gown.

imageimage
INSPIRATION: Tom played off Zooey’s Oscar de la Renta gown which had architectural beading at the top and splashes of sparkle throughout the skirt. They wanted to create a nail look that had a classic, vintage, Old Hollywood feel and decided on a 60s-inspired floral motif (offsetting the dress’s architectural elements). The result was a luxe, glamorous 3D design with soft tones and splashes of metallic gold.

STEP-BY-STEP:
STEP 1: After prepping nails, Tom created an offset French manicure using a pastel yellow polish, L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Versailles Romance in Crème Puffs (discontinued); He applied the polish along the tip of the nail on an angle, swooping upward at two thirds of the way creating an off center point.
STEP 2: He applied L’Oréal Paris Magic Top Coat Collection in True Gold (discontinued) with a striper brush along the top of the French tip to soften the line between the tip and the bare natural nail
STEP 3: Apply one coat of L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Top of the Line top coat ($5.99)
STEP 4: Once dry, Tom used different size gold studs to create the center of the daisies to give the nail a 35 effect; The daises were randomly placed, off center and sometimes overlapping.
STEP 5: Using L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in I Will! ($5.99), he used a small detail brush to create the petals
STEP 6: He finished the look off by adding more of the gold glitter polish over the daisy centers, blending out onto the petals.
STEP 7: To set the entire look, apply one coat L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Top of the Line top coat ($5.99)

AMY POEHLER (HAIR)

Amy Poehler is proving to be the finest host (along with Tina Fey) the Golden Globes has had in a long time. In addition, she is a beauty to look at. Her hair is always meticulously in an up' do or elegantly styled with soft sleekness. Here's the know-how behind the look.

HAIR STYLIST: Mara Roszak
INSPIRATION: To complement the clean lines and classic silhouette of Amy’s stunning Stella McCartney dress, Mara wanted her hair to have a more polished, sleek feel.

Here's how to achieve her simple, yet elegant hair look.
STEP 1: Mara started by applying L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It High Lift Creation Spray ($4.99) to her roots
STEP 2: She blew dry the hair with a medium sized round brush
STEP 3: Then, she added waves to her hair with a 1 ½ inch barrel curling iron
STEP 4: Once the hair was set, she loosely brushed it out for a soft, loose-waved look
STEP 5: For extra shine, she sprayed L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Sleek It Strand Smoother Serum Spray ($4.99) all over Amy’s hair before finishing the look with L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Lock It Weather Control Hairspray ($4.99)

Golden Globes Beauty Report

January 13th, 2014

My #1 HIT.

image
Cate Blanchett was the epitome of elegance: Her skin flawless, her Grace Kelly-inspired hair perfectly styled, and her Armani Prive gown was elegant and sexy with the back plunging way low. And to top it off, her speech defined eloquence in every way. She always has that 'wow' appear.

As you will see below, layering is key in achieving a perfect hue. And, Cate's secret to flawless skin? Using the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask prior to makeup application.

Here is what you need to know to achieve my favorite beauty look:

THE LOOK: Soft and Romantic

THE INSPIRATION: "We didn't want to do the expected red lip to go with her gorgeous Armani black gown," Said Lobell. "So we went the softer route. No harsh lines. Instead, I blended colors for dimension."

THE PRODUCTS:
Eye - Lancôme Hypnôse Waterproof Custom Volume Mascara - Jeanine piled on layers and layers to both the top and bottom lash line, combined with individual flares, to create dramatic lashes.
Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Intuition and Illusion D'Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Emervielle - By blending the pinky-beige and goldy-beige shades and dusting them from the lid to the lash line, in addition to adding a pop of Emervielle to the lid, Jeanine was able to create dimension without using any liners. Nars Brow Shader and Brow Gel - Jeanine created a defined but not too harsh brow

Face- Nars Highlighting Blush in Satellite of Love and Lancôme Translucence Mattifying Silky Press Powder-Jeanine layered both powders in order to highlight Cate's defined cheekbones.

Lip- Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick in #502 Scarlatto and #509 Boudoir - Jeanine layered #509 Boudoir (a nude rose) on top of 502 #Scarlatto (a raspberry rose)

Now on to hair.... to achieve this sophisticated underwrap hairstyle Robert Vetica used Vidal Sassoon Pro Series and shared these steps.

1.First prep damp hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse, applying throughout the hair for lift and hold.
2.Create a low side part and then starting in the back, take a medium boar bristle round brush and blow dry hair down and away from the face, keeping hair flat. Apply a bit more mousse to the front of your hair to help shape your style while giving extra hold to your look.
3.Once hair is dry, begin curling it. Using a ¾ inch curling iron, take hair in the back of your head, separate into 2 inch sections and curl.
4.Once the curled hair has cooled, backcomb to create texture and roll hair up into an “underwrap” style, pinning the look into place. Once all the hair has been rolled and pinned, pull a few pieces of hair from the “underwrap” to create a natural look with a little texture.
5.To finish, spray hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hairspray to lock your look in place.

I Have A Blush Crush

December 10th, 2013

~ Introducing the NEW Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette Blush & Glow Trio.

image

I am a mixer. I hardly ever use one facial tint, one blush or one shadow. I think you get the most natural glow or look when you mix a few shades together. That is why I have a blush crush on Lancome's new line. There are a total of three shade combinations: Ménage à Trois Kissed has a flirty pink for the essential day look and a sexy golden peach shade to take your style to the next level for a night on the town.Ménage à Trois Glow gives you a flawless complexion with a warm variety of shades. Ménage à Trois Flush offers an elegant, natural look that simply warms your cheeks---- all help you to create the perfect, natural yet sexy glow for every mood and every occasion.

Here are some great tips to create your best blushing look from Lancôme National Celebrity Makeup Artist, Darais:

· In winter months, you should take a break from your bronzer, especially if you are going for a natural beauty look.
· For light skin use Flush, for medium skin use Kissed, for dark skin it’s all about Glow. Apply shade 1 softly to the center of the cheek apples. Use the second shade to buff and blend over it in a soft pressing and swirling motion. Less is more with shade 2. Use shade 3 to highlight on the cheek bone, brow bone, and inner corners of the eye.
· You can also set lipsticks with these blush shades for longer bleed proof and more matte wear. Just lightly dab it on your lips to give you a great shine without lip gloss, or even under lip gloss.

An Expert Weighs-In On My Daily Beauty Routine

December 9th, 2013

~ Find out what she thought and products she recommends.

I turned to the expert *Dr. Erin Gilbert, who is a Board Certified Dermatologist practicing in New York City, to review my daily beauty routine, and offer any advice she would like to share.

ME: In the evening, I always wash my face before bedtime! I alternate with a gentle foaming cleanser/Clarisonic and an enzyme exfoliator most times.
Dr. Gilbert: Washing your face before bed is one of the most important elements of your skin care regimen. It removes the surface layer of toxins that have accumulated throughout the day that age your skin prematurely. These include exhaust, dirt, eczema causing pollens and dust, as well as oxidative stressors from ambient pollutants.
Alternating your cleanser is smart move, and a habit that I have adopted as well. Sticking to one cleanser often doesn't produce the best results because your skin texture changes from day to day, particularly if you are using a retinol. Some days you need more moisture if your skin is feeling a bit drier, and using a gentle cleanser will rebalance your skin's pH and moisture level. On other days you need to gently strip off an extra layer of accumulated grime or flakiness. The take home message here is to not scrub your skin aggressively. Scrubbing your skin with harsh and abrasive beads or cloths leads to broken blood vessels, and worsens redness and inflammation.

imageME: I exfoliate my face in the shower 3 to 4 days a week- I love the new Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Peeling Gel that just peels off dry flakes rather than rubbing something abrasive on the skin
Dr. Gilbert: Chemical exfoliators that contain either lactic, glycolic or salicylic acid are a great way to get your skin glowing without the harsh scrubbing.

ME: Once I pat my skin dry I use an oil or Vitamin C Serum and let this absorb into my skin.
Dr. Gilbert: All products are more effective when they are applied to freshly exfoliated skin, so good call! The one caveat here is exercise caution with skin oils. Some people can use them and some simply can't without breaking out. There is no rhyme or reason for this. I've actually discussed this with the top lipid biochemists in the industry who study acne and they don't even know why! Want to know my theory? I believe that there are fundamental differences in people's oil producing glands. Some people's skin just naturally produce more oil. If you are in that category, you can handle an oil added back to your skin. If you are not a natural oil producer, you will break out if you add oils back to your skin and lighter serums are a better option for you.

imageME: Then I normally wait an hour if time allows and alternate with a retinol product like RoC Deep Wrinkle Night Cream or an overnight moisturizer mask that is thick. I love the Korres Wild Rose + Vitamin C Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial (and the new Korres Greek Yoghurt Advanced Nourishing Sleeping Facial)
Dr. Gilbert: You can't ever go wrong with a retinol and in fact I insist that my patients use them. Here's why: retinols increase the rate of skin cell turnover. This improves overall skin radiance as well as reducing fine lines and wrinkles, improving sun spots, and even preventing acne breakouts.
(I couldn't agree more with Dr. Gilbert and the over the counter retinols like Roc's retinol line are effective, easily accessible and affordable.) However, overnight moisturizing masks are a great way to boost skin moisture if you have more mature or dry skin. Younger skin may not benefit and may run into problems with some of these heavier products, however! Beware of acne!

ME: In the morning, I don't wash my face and only splash very cold water on it.
Dr. Gilbert: Cold water contracts blood vessels and shrinks pores, resulting in a fresh, even skin texture. If you have thoroughly cleansed your skin the night before this may be enough of a regimen in the morning. If you wake up with raccoon eyes and make up on, head for a morning cleanser---- I'll, jump in to share, remember you should NEVER sleep with makeup on, major no, no!

imageME: I then apply a lightweight vitamin C serum, followed by an eye cream (I use many different ones including RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream.)
Dr. Gilbert: Vitamin C has antioxidant properties and can protect your skin throughout the day from oxidative stressors in your environment. Be sure to use a powerful and effective C. Also, eye creams are a must once you pass the 30 mark! They target fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. Those containing retinol, like the RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream, and those containing sunscreen, actually prevent skin aging in this delicate region.

ME: Once the serum is absorbed, I apply a day moisturizer (may or may not contain SPF, but my m/up tint that I use always contains SPF15/30).
Dr. Gilbert: Suncreen of SPF 30+ is a must, and most moisturizers with SPF are not actually SPF 15 or 30. I use Skinceuticals, Elta MD or La Roche Posay Mineral SPF on top of my moisturizer to ensure adequate protection.

Dr. Gilbert shares some additional tips:
- INVEST in a humidifier to help combat the drying effects of the winter.
- REAPPLY sunscreen! The American Academy of Dermatology tells us that in order to effectively prevent skin cancer, we should reapply our sunscreen every two hours! You can apply a liquid or, more conveniently, a mineral powder formulation. I like Jane Iredale or color science products.
- LIFESTYLE is the most important element in skin aging. Period. Your skin reflects your health from the inside out. If your cells are starving and toxic your skin will show it. Exercise increases blood flow to your skin, which is the largest organ in your body.

Well, I am pleasantly surprised that my skin care routine measures up to receive the doctor's approval. I know my skin can absorb oils well without breakouts so I take full advantage of this, and I am very wise to use products containing RETINOLS. I DO apply sunscreen everyday, but I normally only reapply it when I am on the beach or in the sun for an extended amounts of time; however, I learned it should be done daily for full protection. I hope you will find some of Dr. Gilbert's approved tips helpful and adapt them into your lifestyle as well.

*I am excited to share that both Dr. Gilbert and I share a same title---- RoC Ambassador!

My Locks Feel Young Again!

December 3rd, 2013

~ Ouidad Omega 3- Replenishing Hair Treatment

image
I've been having some hair despair, for a while now, probably the past year. It hasn't been with with the cut or color, thankfully I found a new team that I love, but with the texture. It lacked luster, shine and softness.

I recently received some Ouidad products in the mail, and due to the nature of my hair- straight- I don't get an opportunity to try her curly-product line. But, this Omega 3- Replenishing Treatment seemed like a good one to try and I wasn't disappointed. I've been using it for only a month, and definitely have been seeing some great hair benefits. I use it as an add-on after I condition my hair in the shower three times a week, so it's easy to use, and it never weighs my hair down or makes it too soft--- I was concerned about this. It gives my hair exactly what it needs: Hydration + Shine.

It contains Omegas, which I imagine does the trick and I figure if it is so good for your body, why wouldn't it work wonders for your hair. This potent blend of omega fatty acids (Omega-3, 6 and 9), helps restore the natural lipid barrier of the hair and fortifies its protective surface layer.

This formula also contains Ouidad’s proprietary amino acid cocktail—including flax seed oil, passion fruit seed oil, and acai pulp oil—the formula recreates the protective lipid barrier and rehydrates the hair shaft, restoring and replenishing lost moisture. And an extra special ingredient is harvested from the seed of the macroloba tree, indigenous to the Amazon rainforest, the certified organic macroloba oil in the formula helps to promote softness and shine as it delivers both conditioning and reparative benefits.

This product gets two thumbs up from me, and worth a try to help restore hair's youthfulness and breathe new life into hair that needs a reboot.

No Surprise ‘SELFIE” is the Word of the Year

November 22nd, 2013

~Here are some tips for your best SELFIE.

image from DaiilyMail.Co.UK
image
In case you haven’t heard, Oxford Dictionaries just announced that the word “selfie” is the 2013 “Word of the Year”! So while this term may have first surfaced in Australia back in 2002, it’s become an irreplaceable part of everyday vocabulary in recent years to define a “self-portrait typically snapped with a smartphone and shared over social networks.”

While a smile is also something to keep in mind when preparing to snap any photo, the key to a perfectly fabulous selfie is great skin. To achieve the best look to be captured, here are some tips to highlight the ways to take a perfect selfie:

· Prep your peepers the night before with the moisture-rich, line-fighting moisturizer RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream. It’s a retinol-based formula that’s specially formulated for the delicate eye area. It helps even out dark circles and puffiness so you don’t have to use too much cover-up for photos
· Lighting is key – anything from using the natural sun light to tilting a desk lamp just right will help illuminate and set up the shoot for success
· Before you cover up unwanted blemishes with concealer, dab on the Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment. It dries clear and helps reduce pimples in only four hours with the two percent salicylic acid formula
· Apply a skin-smoothing primer, like the RoC Instant Facial Smoother. It’s has a lightweight, silky formula that evens out imperfections (goodbye fine lines!), illuminates dull skin for a brighter complexion and creates a perfect canvas for makeup
· Pat down skin with blotting tissues to whisk away excess oil before you start snapping photos. Try the Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets which soak up shine without smudging makeup or leaving behind powder

image

All products mentioned are available at your local CVS/Pharmacy Stores and mass retailers nationwide.

imageGIVEAWAY: MBB is givingaway THREE RoC Instant Facial Smoothers to our lucky readers. ENTER now by sending me an email to susan@mybeautyberry.com with RoC in the subject to win. Deadline: 11/22/13 at midnight (EST).

There is a very good article in today's NYTimes about mascara ads. Most lashes promoting a mascara are quite obviously enhanced and honestly I worked on this brand and understand that in photos lashes need to look absolutely lush to help sell the product. But, I also believe that consumers should know this fact and be aware so there is no misconception.

Today's mascaras are technologically driven with super-tech brush designs and formulas that match. Lashes have never looked so good thanks to these new products, but let's face it nothing quite compares to a set of lashes with 'inserts' --- a modern way of saying extensions.

I hope this clears the air.

My New Weapon for Great Hair

November 12th, 2013

~Sam Villa’s E.T.C. Light Professional Ionic Hair Dryer

image
This gem of an appliance arrived just in time at my front door, right before my arm was about to fall off. Blow drying my hair can be a definite arm workout, but I rather get definition at Go Figure than holding a dryer in hand. I was so pleasantly surprised that Sam Villa's, who by the way is the founding partner of the Sam Villa brand and education artistic director for Redken 5th Avenue, new E.T.C. Light Professional Ionic Hair Dryer is so very light. In fact, it is one of the smallest and lightest (less than a pound) blow dryers on the market, and it doesn't sacrifice its intense power. My hair dries quicker, style looks better and my arm doesn't hurt afterwards, so that's a great end to the perfect blowout!

And, to celebrate the launch, consumers will receive $30.00 off the purchase price ($199.00) until the end of the year.

Jennifer Aniston cut off her hair!

Ok, ok, I know this isn't breaking news, but it is better to see, hear and read about this than all the post-election news. So at the tenth hour I am sharing with you, "yes it is true, Jen has cut-off her hair." I am hearing mixed reports on why she did it, varying from too much damage due to all the Brazilian treatments she had to it was time for a change. Whatever the reason she still looks beautiful, and I am sure this trend for short will take-off just like the Rachel-do did. As for me, I'm keeping my locks long, not ready for any radical changes in this life right now.

Erno Laszlo Phormula 3-9 Eye Repair

~Potent and protective.

I missed the launch of Erno Laszlo Phormula 3-9 Repair Balm, but read rave reviews about it so when the Eye Repair launched, I thought , this is a must try. I love eye gels that offer cooling, and this one does just that while stimulating circulation. The Balm is a thick white gel that absorbs immediately into the skin working its powerful beauty magic on eyes along with botanical-extracts that protect and super-hydraters that moisturize and smooth out fine lines. The price tag might be steep, but a little goes a long way and after all aren't your eyes worth it.

Beauty Goes Underground

November 4th, 2013

~L’Oreal Paris creates a marketplace with the MTA.

image
Running to a meeting and left your lipstick at home? Off to a date and realize your nails look blah? Well if you're a NYC Midtown girl no need to worry, because as you are running for the train, you can now make a quick stop at the 'L'Oreal Paris Vending Machine'. Well it's not exactly known as a 'vending machine', it acts like one, but is a lot more high tech than one. The project is being called L'Oreal Paris Intelligent Color Experience and women (men too) will see a fashionably lit machine with all the bells and whistles. It will have screens and a mirror that use cameras and sensors to recommend L'Oreal Paris cosmetics to those in need of a quick fix or change in color, which they can then purchase.

Starting today at the 42nd Street-Bryant Park station through Dec. 30 passers-by will able to be the first to test and select this new way to shop. On the left side of the machine is a full length mirror. In front of this mirror is a round circle she will be asked to stand on, while digital animations will present her silhouette and the colors she is wearing internally, then she will have a moment to choose cosmetics to "match" or "clash" her outfit. Product suggestions will appear on screen and she can then make her choices. It's that easy, and I am told will take no more than 2-minutes in total from start to finish, but I can see it taking a little longer to decide what shades to select.

This is an exciting and innovative move by a cosmetic giant who is predicting a new shopping era unfolding in an unlikely place. It all makes sense, and I hope the machines continue to spread throughout NYC and other new city locations. Like cosmetics enhance our look, these new Intelligent Color Experience Machines make for a prettier subway station too!

Another Filler is FDA-Approved

October 31st, 2013

~ JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC

image
This just in: On October 23, 2013 the FDA approved JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC, the first and only filler approved to temporarily correct age‐related volume loss in the cheek area in adults age 21 and over.

If you are wondering, like I did, "Hasn't this been approved already?", you are probably confusing this with Juvederm, which is target to soften deep folds, and wrinkles.

Here's what Juvederm Voluma XC does do: It helps create a more youthful appearance to the face and provides natural-looking and long-lasting results - up to two years with optimal treatment.

What you need to know:
· It is a non-surgical treatment option that is performed in the physician’s office.
· It is a gel that is injected into the cheek area to gently lift the skin. It temporarily corrects age-related volume loss in the cheek area helps create a more youthful appearance to the face.
· It is made from a modified form of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural complex sugar that occurs within the body.
· It is made with Allergan’s proprietary VYCROSS™ technology, an advanced manufacturing process that results in a smooth gel that flows easily and consistently.
· It is also contains a small amount of lidocaine which helps to numb the treatment area during the injection procedure.

A Potion with Some ex-‘GLOW’-sion

October 29th, 2013

~By Bliss

image

Many of you who read my posts regularly know that I LOVE products which claim a 'glow'- these are an automatic must-try for me. Marketers word love me, because I am a 'sucker' everytime. If you are in your forties, who wouldn't want to glow? Right. Couple that with ingredients that contains 'vitabead-infused' moisture with oxygen and micro-algae for an instant burst of youthful radiance', and I would say you have a million dollar line beginning.

Well, that's exactly what Bliss is starting with the launch of Triple Oxygen ex-'Glow'-sion, $64. It has a beautiful pink texture containing high powered beads that burst onto the skin. The texture feels thick, but definitely not too creamy on the skin. It absorbs very quickly, in fact, I thought too quickly and would have liked to see a little more hydration. But this amount is perfect for most. I highly recommend experimenting with this product, because you will see a difference. Try applying the product on one side of the face to see how much your skin looks hydrated and glowy then apply it to the other side.

I see it now, ex-'GLOW'-sion for eyes, ex-'GLOW'-sion CC cream, and the list continues as well as me being the first in line to try them!

One Amazing Oil

~Sjal Saphir Concentrate

image
Facial Oils are having a big moment in beauty right now and I am loving this here-to-stay trend. What's not to love about it, most oils are natural, they are chemical-free, and they provide a radiance to make your skin glow. I was excited to try Sjal Saphir Concentrate Anti-aging Facial Oil, which the scent alone sends me right to a luxe spa experience, leaving me with a sense of well-being.

When science meets nature, you get an unbelievable product. This soothing sea green-tinted wash holds years of discovery from the deep blue sea, and while the essential oils such as meadowfoam and camilla seed oil provides barrier protection, other botanical oils provide calming. The ingredients which I feel really work its magic on the skin is the Bio- marine algae in the saphir concentrate, which contains large amounts of omegas 3, 6 and 9 is excellent for boosting energy and replenishing skin.

WInter-ready, Sjal Saphir Concentrate Anti-aging Facial Oil will be my one defense in keeping my skin looking supple, glowing and nourished this cold-weather season.

Many of us don't go out without our lip balm, and others keep one stored at every location they use throughout the day- car, kitchen, office, bedside. Some like our ChapStick others like the Eos, while I will setttle for whatever I have on hand tinted or clear. But a few years ago, Maybelline started a rage with the launch of Babylips Moisturizing Lip Balms, which gave the balm a new look. It was a stick and tinted in subtle hues of nudes and pinks, even plums, but now they came back 'electrified' in colors of bright violet, fuchsia and orange. But don't get frightened, the product still only leaves a subtle wash of color, but one thing is for sure it is easy to find in your bag.

Great price too, only $2.99 at Target (better than $3.99 at cvs.com)

My Mom Friends Will LOVE This Tip

October 8th, 2013

~Avoid the cut if a gooey piece of gum gets stuck to hair.

You know how annoying it is when you step on a piece of gum and it gets all caught up in the grooves of your shoes or sneakers. We can easily slip the shoe off and deal with it another day, but if it burst in your hair, well that's a whole other story. Or here's a better scenario: a sibling or troublemaker at school purposely rolls a piece up and sticks it into your child's hair.

This could happen to anyone- your son, daughter, pet or yourself. Avoid the cut, and keep this tip in mind next time a bubble pops wildly out of control.

Source: The American Academy of Dermatology

“Parents often think the only way to remove gum from the hair is to cut it out. Fortunately, common items from your pantry can do a great job at removing the gum – and sparing an impromptu haircut,” said board-certified dermatologist Paradi Mirmirani, MD, FAAD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco.

To remove gum without damaging the hair, Dr. Mirmirani recommends people follow these steps:

- Find a jar of creamy style peanut butter or vegetable oil, such as olive oil.
- Cover the gum completely with peanut butter or oil using your fingers or an old toothbrush. With peanut butter, the oils in the product make the chewing gum base stiffer and less sticky.
- Wait a few minutes to allow the product to work.
- Remove the gum from the hair. Vegetable oil is especially useful when removing gum from eyebrows or eyelashes.
- Wash your child’s hair as normal.

Click here to watch how easy this is, and opt to use the olive oil on peanut allergic children.

The pumpkin-craze is at its peak right now especially in your local coffee shops everyone seems to serving up a yummy Pumpkin Spice Latte. Besides drinking this delightful treat or munching on a pumpkin/nut muffin your skin can benefit from this high antioxidant fruit.

Before I get into all the details, I want to introduce you to a new line from a prominent aesthetician Jillian Wright and owner of the Jillian Wright Clinical Spa on the upper east side. She is launching her first skincare line, which focuses on anti-aging and preventative skin issues. Each product contains pure botanical ingredients and fruit enzymes - one ingredient of course is pumpkin and another fall favorite is pomegranate!

After performing thousands of facials throughout her extensive career (and working with beauties such as: Kristin Wiig, Sheri Shepard, Alicia Silverstone and Tea Lioni!), Jillian decided the time has finally come to launch her own skincare line designed to meet the needs of her client's skin.

image

One product reigning to the top of the must-have list is the Skin Smoothie: Enzyme Exfoliation Mask, which is -Paraben-free and -Gluten-free. This super smoothie contains these 6 enzymes: Pomegranate, pumpkin, fig, pineapple, papaya and protease. These all work synergistically to remove dead skin cells while helping to hydrolysis proteins into peptides and amino acids improving skin health. Brightens, softens and regenerates healthy skin while removing sluggish, dead and lackluster skin cells.

Three other reasons to love pumpkin: vitamin A (for aiding cell turnover), antioxidant vitamin C (brightens skin, evens pigmentation), and zinc (antibacterial effects).

Jillian's passion for skincare resonates into her packaging as well - each box is made with 100% tree-free paper and is infused with real wildflower seeds that grown when planted! A true eco-friendly product inside and out.

YES, I’m Using Bee Venom in my Anti-Aging Product

October 3rd, 2013

~ Here’s the lowdown on the most buzz-ed about ingredient.

image

The world of beauty has seen it all, and many don't even flinch when crazy ingredients are used in skin care products to promote beautiful skin.

The industry has been getting stung with a dose of bee venom in their skin care products. One product making news and just launching over at Sephora stores is Manuka Doctor Rejuvenating Face Mask. I actually just spoke to a sales person at the Sephora in NYC, and she said this has been a very HOT item for them. It is a line making waves from the other side of the world, from New Zealand to be exact, and is the only skincare product to combine the potency of patented Purified Bee Venom mixed with New Zealand,-sourced Manuka Honey.

The bee venom craze started a while ago, when gossip magazines started publicizing that stars are flocking to bee venom facials! Call it crazy, but even the Wall Street Journal picked up on it and stated, "The venom rage originated in Britain, where many of these products are produced (perhaps coincidentally, Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton, whose studio is in London, based her spring collection on bees and their human keepers). The mania grew buzzier in 2011, when a press leak revealed that Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, tried a venom mask before the royal wedding—on the recommendation of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall."

One producer of creams containing bee venom even shares that "it's a natural alternative to Botox, because it tightens almost immediately."

BUT, I will mention if you are allergic to bee stings, stay away from this product, and if you are not sure, get tested first or do a patch test to be certain no reactions occur.

As for me, yes, I have been using the Manuka Doctor Mask, and although I don't see any miracle Botox-like outcome, I will share that my skin has never felt softer and well-moisturized, which certainly help blur out fine lines by keeping the skin supple and plumped.

Designer cosmetic lines have been showing up a lot these days with Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors making their debut in the past months. Today's spotlight highlights another launch, Tory Burch Beauty.

Inspired by her clothing line, Ms. Burch streamlined and took the less is more approach when deciding on the makeup mix. This is my type of line, hosting just a few of her favorites: a nude lipstick, a cheek and lip tint, a bronzing palette, and a retractable face brush. The only product missing is a universal face tint, but I will settle for this happily.

What is receiving raves is her fragrance and body line which she wanted to have an ambiguous tone of tomboy meets feminine.

And of course, the orange and gold packaging is Tres Chic just like her!

Butterfly Lashes

September 26th, 2013

~Yes this is an actual effect, here’s how to create the look

.imageimage
I use to consult for a mascara brush company, and help conceptualize new looks in mascara brushes that can create various lash effects.

One of my proposed new product ideas was the butterfly eye lash look, where the end result looked like lashes were splayed as they got closer to the outer eye. This would help create a wider-eye look--- what many women like. To achieve this look, the brush designer and I discussed fibers that started off shorter at the tip of the mascara brush and gradually got longer towards the rod.

Unfortunately, this brush never came to fruition, and fibers were replaced with the popular molded brush design.

However, I was pretty excited to see this new brush sent to me from L'Oreal Paris--- Voluminous Butterfly. This new brush delivers a unique shape for lash-lengthening results. The brush is asymmetrical like most, but the bristles increase in length along the base, which performs exactly as I mentioned above--- to splay out lashes at the corners of the eyes. And because it is molded, it offers a more combing effect that fibers just don't do as well.

Insider Scoop: Julianna Margulis used it to achieve her glamorous lashes Sunday night at the Emmy's. Julianna's eyes reflected a 60's starlet without overpowering the look with heavy liquid liner. Instead, shadows were used to build the shape of the eye, and Voluminous Butterfly Mascara worked its magic by concentrating the application on the outer lashes.

Be on the lookout for L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Butterfly Mascara, which is launching in October for $8.99.

Summer Left Us On Sunday…

September 24th, 2013

...now we need to transition to ‘fabulous fall skin’.

image

Our skin requires special needs with the change of the seasons, so if you're wondering how to transition your skincare routine from summer to fall, here Dermatologist Dr. David E. Bank reveals his top tips and product recommendations.

1. Continue to protect your skin by using sunscreen daily. Even though the days of laying out at the beach have come to an end, you still need daily sun protection. Go for a lightweight sunscreen that won’t clog your pores but will still provide ample protection. I like AVEENO® PROTECT + HYDRATE™ Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 – plus it hydrates skin!

2. Do a self-check and visit your dermatologist for a skin cancer screening if you find any suspicious looking spots. The earlier skin cancer is caught, the higher the success rate for curing it.

3. Be sure to exfoliate. Countless hours outdoors throughout the summer may lead to a buildup of dry, dead skin cells. Using an exfoliator to slough off dead skin cells, will leave your skin radiant and smooth.

4. Moisturize skin everday! After exfoliating it’s important to use a moisturizer to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier. Choose a lightweight daily use formula that will help prevent and protect against dry skin, like AVEENO® Daily Moisturizing Lotion.

5. The harsh elements of summer can increase skin sensitivity. Use a body wash formulated with calming ingredients like oat, to soothe skin and reduce any chances of irritation. I recommend AVEENO® Daily Moisturizing Body Wash for everyday use – it’s soap-free, dye-free, hypoallergenic and great for all skin types.

Did You Know There Really Is a Red Carpet Treatment?

~The secret to achieving the look.

image

Get the Emmy Glow on the Red Carpet! Kinara Skin Care, known for its signature Red Carpet Facial (I LOVE this product and you can order it to do at home!) has another must- have treatment to achieve the red carpet glowKinara’s Sunless Tan!

Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn who won an Emmy last night for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama, and Modern Family’s Emmy nominee, Sofia Vergara frequent the Kinara Skin Spa and are fans of Kinara’s Sunless Tan treatment. The 30-minute, luxurious treatment provides safe, sunless tanning that is streak free and a quick-drying formula that leaves skin looking beautifully bronzed and radiant.

Kinara’s Celebrity Tanning Specialist, Natalia Armonik aims to give clients like Anna Gunn, Sofia Vergara and Elizabeth Banks a glow that looks as if they just came back from a Hawaii vacation. The color lasts about 7 to 10 days, and with all the gowns with thigh-high slits. Armonik says the legs are the most popular part of the body, so she pays extra attention to that area. Before applying the bronzing solution, Armonik often primes her clients by exfoliating with Kinara’s own mixture of peptides, lecithin and honey.

A top tip for achieving the perfect red carpet tan? Start with impeccably exfoliated skin!

Additional Kinara fans and Emmy nominees from last night’s awards include Kerry Washington, Amy Poehler and Laura Linney.

The EMMY’S Glow

September 23rd, 2013

~Celebrities shined from neck to face last night.

image

I noticed that many starlets looked "glowing" and "radiant" last night. Their skin had a sheen to it, I don't want to call it shiny, because I believe that connotes a negative look, when I actually LOVED it. I absolutely prefer a genuine glow to a matte look, and while the younger generation tries so hard to achieve this matte look, I try so hard to achieve the opposite.

Skin that glows looks luminous to me, real and fresh, and if you are middle-aged this skin is more youthful to a dull, matte look. Radiant skin reflects a look that is well-moisturized, plump and supple - fine lines are more discreet- but when skin is matte, I look at it as being dry and lines exaggerated. This I try to AVOID at all costs!

So kudos goes out to the starlets who literally shined on the red carpet, like Anna Gunn, who glowed from neck up and looked stunning doing so!

A Product Even My Boys LOVE

September 19th, 2013

~But shhh! don’t tell them I said so.

image
Boys are very different from girls, in many ways, and when it comes to me having them test products, well, its all about the way I say it or else I get, "I'm not using your beauty stuff, it's for girls." Oy!

So, as they are beginning to mature, change, their oil glands begin to over react, and I share with them products in distinct bottles that aren't pink or smell too fruity.

Biore is a line my boys like, and won't admit it (they have a ton of fun with the strips, even though nothing wipes off yet!), but will give a smile when a new one comes their way. The Warming Anti-Blackhead Cleanser is a favorite, because of its neutral packaging, and it warms up on your skin when you begin to cleanse. And now that the temperature is beginning to drop, this self-heating product gets moved to the front of the shower basket.

And why do I like it so much? It makes them wash their face thoroughly and cleanses away pore-clogging dirt and oil, working hard to diminish blackheads and prevent acne. This warming clay is effective because it also contains salicylic acid.

GIVEAWAY: I have THREE to giveaway! Enter by adding Biore in the subject and email me at susan@mybeautyberry.com. Deadline: 9/20/13.

Beauty Awards go to TWO Great Products

September 16th, 2013

RoC scores big.

image
I've taken a break from reporting on NYFashionWeek to share BIG news about a product that works. I have praised its results here on my site many times, and I have also agreed to continue a second year as RoC's Ambassador, for one reasaon---- I believe in the brand and the products perform.

Today, I am excited to let you know that the RoC Multi Correxion 5 in1 Restoring Night Cream has won a prestigious Allure Beauty Breakthrough Award!

It won based on its performance and key ingredient, Hexinol. It is an awfully complicated understanding of how all its ingredients ' speak' to one another, respond and take action so let's just say good cells, like collagen and elastins, are protected and reversal of damage takes place. According to an interview Allure conducted with Menas Kizoulis, principal scientist for research and development at RoC, he stated that in a company-sponsored study 91 percent of people using the line's Restoring Night Cream showed improvement in undereye wrinkles after 16 weeks, and 78 percent of women showed significant improvement in hyperpigmentation.

The beauty of this product is that it is not intended to be a replacement for other active ingredients, like retinoids, but rather it works in tandem to complement the rest of your regimen. While one ingredient is performing its duty to fight wrinkles the other is concentrating on smoothing out your skin tone and perfecting its surface.

~ The feather-effect created by Odile Gilbert

image

At the Marchesa Show yesterday, Odile Gilbert for Kérastase Paris created a look that was a glamorous, punk style with feathers.

Here's how to create the look:

Steps:
- On damp hair, create a deep right side part and prep with Mousse Bouffante
- Blow dry in sections using a paddle brush, and apply Ciment Thermique on the top of the head to keep hair smooth
- Create a small ponytail at the hairline on the right side, and secure with a clear elastic
- Spray hair with Laque Dentelle
- Apply black hair glue to strands of ostrich feathers and apply to the hair at the front right section, starting at the elastic and working your way down

~Love this look and its cool downtown vibe!

Some of the nails from last season that made news, really where simply over the top in design, shape and color. Sophistication just didn't translate in the overall look, BUT this is something cool, chic and a must-to know and a must-to do.

Backstage at ICB x Prabal Gurung, butter LONDON’s Global Colour Ambassador, Katie Jane Hughes created this rave inspired nail look.

image

The Scoop: The collection was inspired by holographic textures and contemporary fluorescent light artists such as Dan Flavin. The ICB girl is street chic with a sleek downtown vibe.
The Look: Katie applied butter LONDON Nail Foundation to the nails followed by the new butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Leccy – a sheer, blue opal fleck overcoat (out October 2013). She placed colorful holographic foil down the center of six nails and completed the look by adding a glitter tip to three accent nails.

~Sally Hershberger strikes it right with braids.

The hair look for Naeem Khan can be defined as strong, elegant and feminine. This look mirrors the chic, feminist icon Frida Kahlo’s style and textured braids.

image

- Dampen hair and apply a mousse throughout
- Rough dry the hair with a hair dryer
- Spray Plump Up Collagen Thickening Mist throughout to add texture, volume and give hair guts
- Create a strong center part and divide hair in half
- Create two ponytails on side of hair and braid tightly
- Wrap braid around the crown of the head and hold in place with bobby pins
- For added shine at the top of the head, spray strands with Hyper Hydration Super Keratin Spray
- Finish the look, tame flyaways and hold it in place using Major Body Volumizing Style Boost

STYLING TIPS:
- What’s key is to thicken the hair and add texture to hold the braid
- Spray Plump Up Collagen Thickening Mist through damp hair – the collagen bulks up the hair
- For added texture you can add a mousse or dry shampoo
- To finish off the look and smooth down any flyaways, use Major Body Volumizing Style Boost

~Dick Page for Shiseido creates a “reverse raccoon effect”.

image

I've always loved the looks Dick Page creates---- glowy, radiant and Au Natural with a little bit of edge.. Here, he does it again for Shiseido where he creates the makeup look for Band of Outsider.

For this particular show, I loved what Dick Page did on the eyes. He referred to it as the "reverse raccoon effect". He applied the soft beige shade on the lid and blended it towards the brow, while also applying it deep under the lower lash line for a light-halo around the eye. The shade he chose was New Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Yubam [BE217].

~Redken creates Victoria Beckham’s runway look.

image
Redken Creative Consultant Guido went backstage and muted the hair this season, in order to create a more homogenous runway look. The simplicity of the hair, which was pulled back into a low ponytail and finished with a basic black headband, emphasized cohesion over individuality. By minimizing the unique personalities of each model, Guido enabled Victoria Beckham to communicate her design aesthetic in a clear and concise manner.

image"Overall it's a very minimal aesthetic, a very clean and modern look for Victoria Beckham. She wanted the hair to emphasize uniformity on the runway, which is why I pulled the hair away from the face and secured it with a basic black headband. In a way, this look is modernly classic."

Redken products used were satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion and fashion work 12 versatile working spray.

Here's how to create the look:
Apply satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion to damp hair from root to ends
Using a paddle brush, blow dry hair away from the face
Gather hair about one inch from the neck into a low pony and secure with an elastic
Finish with fashion work 12 versatile working spray to flatten any flyaways
Place headband over head and pull ponytail through

image
butter LONDON’s Global Colour Ambassador, Katie Jane Hughes has this to say about nails moving into Spring/Summer 2014... "I first applied a coat of butter LONDON Nail Foundation followed by two coats butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Pink Ribbon. The soft nail look was juxtaposed by a bright red on the toes."

Katie used butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Pillar Box Red.

imageDesigner: MONIQUE LHUILLIER
Lead Manicurist: Katie Jane Hughes, butter LONDON Global Colour Ambassador
The Scoop: The collection was inspired by sheer elegance through the use of bright, bold colours in clean and modern silhouettes with feminine details.
